Galaxy Hot Chocolate Fund
HOMETRUTHS, Swindon and North Wiltshire
HOMETRUTHS was established in January 2011 and was the first Co-operative in the UK to provide direct services to survivors of domestic abuse and stalking. We are a specialist, independent, not for profit organisation and support victims and survivors aged 16+ living in our local communities. Over a third of our referrals come directly from our community with increasing numbers of self-referrals from victims seeking help. This shows our ability to engage with local people at a time of extreme vulnerablity . The aim of HOMETRUTHS is to reduce risk of serious harm and homicide for survivors of domestic abuse aged 16+ and their children, promoting safety so that individuals have the confidence and independence to develop their personal identities within stronger, safer communities. We provide 1.1 support and group programmes, like the Freedom Programme and we work collaboratively with partner agencies such as the Police, Social Services, Health Visitors, Midwives, Schools, Family support staff, and GP’s. We have specialist projects such as Life In Harmony that supports pregnant women and women with children under the age of 18 months. Pregnant women are 3 times more likely to experience the start or escalation of domestic abuse. We have a supportive group of volunteers who help us raise awareness of the issues of domestic abuse and the impact this has on family life. Volunteers also help us with fundraising and helping out at social events such as the family fun day, Picnic at Lydiard Park and Halloween disco. As a co-operative we adhere to all the principles of a co-operative in supporting our community and importantly ensure equality of access, equity of service and promoting social responsibility in all of our provision. Our volunteers help us achieve this, adhering to the HOMETRUTHS Co-operative philosophy and values. We believe in empowering people and social responsibility is a key component for our work. This is what services users have said about HOMETRUTHS Co-operative. “I have a better understanding of what sort of role model I want for my child.” “It has opened my eyes positively and made me more confident in myself and the decisions I have to make.” “I truly believe that I couldn’t have left my relationship and stayed out of it without the Freedom Programme.”
Prize money will go towards our Life In Harmony Project, supporting pregnant women and mums with children under 18 months living in Swindon and North Wiltshire, who are or have experienced domestic abuse.
