Galaxy Hot Chocolate Fund
Cyrenians, Edinburgh
We are part of Cyrenians and I have responsibility for running the cooking classes that are part of the Good Food programme. We support people who have been excluded from society for whatever reason. Our philosophy is a hand up rather than a hand out. We use food as a vehicle for so much more than feeding people. We run cooking classes which at their heart embrace the concept of: ''something to eat and someone to eat with''
We recently had 3 refugees try and register for our cooking classes that are ordinarily funded by the Edinburgh Council. These 3 gentlemen were however unable to take part due to having no recourse to public funding. The course would have provided an opportunity for them to engage with their local community and gain a Royal Environmental Health Scotland accredited certificate to help with future employment possibilities. If we got the £300 it would enable us to still be able to offer the course to them as well as another person in a similar position. Every door is effectively closed to them, whenever they try to engage with the community around them and hence why I am so passionately committed to giving them a helping hand. It is envisaged that the skills and social confidence gained will then enable them to engage with our community cook clubs around the city that we are in the process of setting up, further assisting with their integration in their local community. £300 will go a long way to achieving this goal. Whilst it might look like it will only benefit 4 individuals it has the potential to benefit the wider community well into the future. £300 will pay for the seed that will grow many trees in the years to come.
